Soften and Open

Monday, December 11th, 2006

I get a daily download from “DailyOM” for my horoscope, which is Taurus.  I thought this one seemed very “Yogic” so I’m sharing it with you.

You may feel convinced that your beliefs are right and might feel like adamantly supporting them today. It could seem that by holding onto what you know is right may give you a stronger sense of support in your interactions. Perhaps reflection upon what you believe in and how those opinions affect your life today can give you the mental clarity you need to understand the diversity of ideas that are present in the world and help you to be receptive to the thoughts of others. If you can see that there are always many ways of looking at each issue, you may come to realize that the grip you have over your ideas can limit you and even constrain you in many aspects of your life. Softening your need to be right could give you greater insights into all aspects of your life and the way in which you relate to the world.Being able to look at life through a multifaceted lens frees us from the limiting ideas that we might have about the world. Once we begin to see that our convictions are simply ways in which we put ourselves in mental constraints, we will notice that opposing ideas actually have similarities, such as the strength with which both sides cling to what each feels is right. By seeing the nuances and shades of gray in others’ ideas today, you will realize that there is beauty in the variety of ideas in this world.

Getting Back To Wellness

Monday, December 11th, 2006

The signals our bodies use to tell us we need to cleanse ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally are multifaceted and often mirror symptoms we associate with illness. If we heed these signs, we not only feel better quickly but also stave off poor health before it can start. These quick fixes for common ailments can get you started.

1. Applying pressure to the acupressure point between the thumb and forefinger can release blockages causing pain, tension, and fatigue. You can relieve a headache naturally by squeezing for 20 seconds and releasing for 10 seconds, without letting go, four times.

2. To breathe freely, irrigate your nasal passages with a neti pot and warm salt water. As you clear and soothe the sinuses, congestion associated with allergies or infection will gradually disappear.

3. Apple cider vinegar is a powerful purifying and detoxifying agent. Soaking for 20 minutes in a warm bath infused with two cups of apple cider vinegar pulls toxins from the body and can clear blocked energy.

4. The foods you eat can have a profound impact on your outlook and mood. Eating a small yet satisfying meal rich in complex carbohydrates can lift your spirit and help you let go of feelings of anger, irritability, and depression.

5. Anxiety and fear dissipate quickly when countered with conscious breathing because concentrating on the breath enables you to refocus your attention inward. You can ground yourself and regain your usual calm by taking a series of deep belly breaths as you visualize your feet growing roots that stretch miles down into the earth.

6. Though tuning out can seem counterproductive, a few minutes spent lost in daydreams or listening to soothing music can help you see your circumstances from a new angle when you feel frustrated.

7. If you feel ill health coming on, brew a wellness elixir. Simmer three sliced lemons, one teaspoon freshly grated ginger, one clove freshly minced garlic, and one quarter teaspoon cayenne pepper in five cups water until the lemons are soft and pale. Strain a portion into a mug and add honey by tablespoons until you can tolerate the taste. Drinking this potent mixture of antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal ingredients three times each day can ensure your symptoms never progress into a full-blown illness.

Osteopena — Hatha Yoga Too!

Monday, December 11th, 2006

Tai Chi is not the only discipline which can strengthen your bones.  One of my students was also in the beginning stages of Osteoporosis.  At her last check up her doctor found NO bone loss — just strong bones.  He told her “keep doing whatever you are doing”.  And she told him nothing had changed except she’d been practicing Yoga for the past two year.  He said “incredible.  I’m a believer in Yoga from now on!”

What Might be Holding You Back

Monday, December 11th, 2006

Here’s another from Daily OM:

You might notice a lack of incentive to get things done today, which could cause you to procrastinate. Perhaps you want to consider the reason why you are dragging your heels and putting things off for later; it may be a sign that you are avoiding facing some aspect of yourself that you are not entirely comfortable with. Taking a few minutes to journal about your indolence today can give you some insight into what you do not wish to acknowledge. It might be that you are uncertain what you will do once your tasks are complete, or you may like the feeling of something holding you back in order to escape changes happening in your life. Understanding the reasons behind your procrastination could motivate you to get everything done and might also bring you to greater realizations about the ways in which you live and perceive your life as a whole. When we avoid our obligations it is usually because we are also circumventing something that is uncomfortable in our lives. Acting as if everything is okay or refusing to see what needs to get done is a way for our minds to lull us into a sense of temporary and momentary security. Thoroughly examining your inner self today, however, will give you an inside view into why you need this sense of certainty in the first place and will ultimately lead you away from your fear and instead to insights about how to live more efficiently and with greater courage and awareness.

osteopena

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

From one of my students.

Just wanted to let you know some good news I received today - after 4 years of being diagnosed with osteopena (beginnings of osteoporosis) my latest bone scan revealed all was NORMAL.  If I wasn’t already a believer of Tai Chi, this would have confirmed its benefits.
